Meet 12.000 years of the past. The museum has excellent collections and more than 1000 square metres of exhibits.
Different permanent displays include a variety of themes: The old museum and the first collections, a room designed as from the thirties. Ethnology / local heritage. Archaeology, with finds from Viking Age, Migration Period, Early Iron Age, Bronze Age and Stone Age.
The local collections of more recent date include daily utensils, costumes, textiles and other items from the rural culture and early railway-town settings in the former heath land of western Himmerland.
In the archaeology section you can study the skull of the oldest Stone Age man in Scandinavia, some of the world’s finest flint artefacts, precious amber- and bronze age finds, well preserved objects from Borremose, a fortified Iron Age village, a 2000 years old shamans bag, a unique Celtic leather shield and remains of clothing from the early Iron Age.
The exhibit also tells the story of the famous Gundestrup silver cauldron. The large Celtic vessel is a masterpiece in early European art, depicting strange motives of beasts, gods, myths and men.
Architecture
The museum is designed by the famous Danish artist Per Kirkeby; 288.000 red bricks shaped like a sculpture. In Aars you will find several of his sculptures, incidentally at the high school next to the museum and at the town square. In roundabouts at the radial roads you can also find four large brick sculptures from 2006.
